Implications of a very light pseudoscalar boson on lepton flavor violation

A long-lived very light pseudoscalar boson would favor lepton flavor violating transitions of charged leptons. Its implications on the l{sub i}{yields}l{sub j}{gamma}{gamma} and l{sub i}{yields}l{sub j}e{sup +}e{sup -} transitions are investigated. Assuming that 2m{sub e}<m{sub {phi}}<m{sub {mu}}, it is found that the inequality B(l{sub i}{yields}l{sub j}{gamma}{gamma})<B(l{sub i}{yields}l{sub j}e{sup +}e{sup -}) holds. The experimental constraints on the decays l{sub i}{yields}l{sub j}{gamma}, l{sub i}{yields}l{sub j}l{sub k}l{sub k}, and l{sub i}{yields}l{sub j}{gamma}{gamma} are used to bound the {phi}l{sub i}l{sub j} couplings.
