Former manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites have recently received increased attention because of potential environmental and health impacts from tars generated as by-products during gas production. This report provides detailed information on one MGP tar disposal site, describing a comprehensive characterization of site contamination, removal of the source tar-containing soils, and monitoring of the efficacy of remedial activities. Several results were generated from this project in terms of geological, microbiological, and chemical characterization of an MGP tar disposal site, known as EPRI Site 24. The results of groundwater plume characterization work showed that soil analysis can provide valuable information for selecting the proper locations and screen lengths for monitoring wells. In addition, the source delineation effort illustrated the need for detailed information to accurately locate source material in three spatial dimensions. Removal of source material followed by natural attenuation of a contaminant plume proved to be an effective site remedial strategy. In specific, source removal eliminated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons available for leaching, thereby allowing the dissipation of the contaminants in the downgradient subsurface. Finally, the work at Site 24 showed that models such as EPRI`s Migration of Organic and Inorganic Chemicals in Groundwater (MYGRT{trademark}) can be used to predict groundwater contaminant levels both before and after remedial measures.
