Horizontal well placement and petrophysical evaluation using LWD

Conference ·
OSTI ID:207258
A well recently drilled in the Gulf of Mexico utilized new developments in logging while drilling (LWD) technology to allow a horizontal wellbore to be accurately placed in difficult targets. Simultaneously, high-quality petrophysical log measurements were taken, allowing very detailed formation evaluation. An instrumented motor provided resistivity, gamma ray, and inclination measurements at or very close to the bit. A new porosity and lithology tool provided azimuthal data from four quadrants of the borehole. All data were used for bed boundary detection at high relative dip angles, geosteering accuracy, and for better estimates of net pay.
