The current status of the theoretical studies of the A = 4 nuclear systems is reviewed. We show that for the 4He bound state (the {alpha}-particle) the computational techniques have reached a great precision even when realistic Hamiltonians including two- and three-body interactions are considered. The present situation of the studies of the scattering state is also discussed, in conjunction with a recent benchmark calculation performed by several groups. The hyperspherical harmonic technique used by the authors to study the four nucleon systems is also reviewed.
