A Landau fluid model for the large-scale dynamics of collisionless plasmas is presented. It extends the Hall-MHD description by retaining pressure anisotropy, Landau damping and leading finite Larmor radius (FLR) corrections. This approach that provides an accurate description of the weakly nonlinear dynamics of long-wavelength Alfven waves is also successfully compared with hybrid simulations of modulational and decay instabilities. The limitations of this model in situations where FLR corrections to all orders are to be retained, as for example in the presence of mirror modes, are analyzed and further developments to include such effects are discussed.
