Sleeper-support is a type of small concrete block foundations which is often used to support buried yard piping at gas compressor stations. The contact condition imposes high local stress which is one of the major design considerations in determining the maximum force that the piping can tolerate, and therefore, the support spacing. NGTL (Nova Gas Transmission Ltd.) has developed a simple equation to determine the support spacing of sleeper-support. This equation has been extensively used in NGTL`s practices and proven to be safe and adequate. However, it is believed to be overly conservative which leads to unwarranted costs. To better understand the structural behavior of sleeper-supported piping, nonlinear elastic-plastic analysis was carried out based on a finite element model. This paper describes the development of the simple spacing equation, the finite element model for nonlinear analysis, and the typical response of sleeper-supported piping under high internal pressure.
