This paper describes four significant cases of interaction between gas pipelines and deforming slopes in geologically unstable areas. These cases have been selected between a number of similar situations in Italy, where soil movements are characterized by their dependency on the seasonal variations of the hydraulic conditions of the slope induced by the alternation of wet and dry periods. For each case some information on the geology of the area and on the topographical characteristics of the slope are given, together with the geometry of the pipeline and the results of monitoring on both the pipe and the slope. The observed soil displacements are then connected to strain accumulation in the pipe at some monitored critical section. Conclusions are reached regarding key parameters in relation to future quantitative analysis and risk mitigation.
