Fatigue crack growth rate tests were performed upon two thermo-mechanical control processed steels polarized in seawater to {minus}0.80 and {minus}0.95v versus SCE with stress ratio 0.5, frequency 0.3 Hz and using various experimental procedures which included different initial {Delta}K, natural K-decreasing, enhanced K-decreasing and natural K-increasing. The results indicated that the threshold {Delta}K and near-threshold fatigue crack growth rates were dependent upon initial {Delta}K and {Delta}K history. This lack of a unique da/dN-{Delta}K interdependence was deduced to have been a consequence of calcareous deposit induced closure in association with the relative magnitudes of calcareous deposit thickness, thickening rate and crack opening displacement.
