The coming of ISO 14000, the Environmental Quality standard being developed by the International Organization for Standardization, will carry a critical message to manufacturers worldwide: domestic political and regulatory issues inevitably will become secondary to the demands of the international marketplace. In the US, the struggle underway between the Clinton administration and the Republican majority over environmental regulation promises to ease industry`s regulatory burden and lower compliance cost. However, a victory by those fighting for more lenient rules could be a hollow one for US business if the international community, through such mechanisms as ISO 14000, demands compliance with a more stringent environmental standard. Confining one`s business to domestic transactions will not do the trick of avoiding the issue, as manufacturers formally adhering to the international standard likely will demand equally strict compliance from their suppliers. Thus, few companies may be able to escape ISO 14000`s impact, even if they are not involved directly in selling to foreign buyers.
