The Department of Defense has revised its acquisition guidance to mandate life cycle management of hazardous materials and the identification of environmental concerns a ``cradle to grave`` approach, for addressing all weapons system life cycle environmental issues. The program also integrates concurrent engineering reviews of developmental programs, existing environmental and future concerns for the defense industrial base, specialized training and any new technology requirements for the DOD`s environmental technology program. The Army and DOD`s environmental technology program receives technology requirements from both material developers and the industrial base. Through a series of reviews with both the user and R and D communities, a plan is generated in order to prioritize work and acquire the necessary funding. This plan is included in the DOD Tri-Service Environmental Quality R and D Strategic Plan and integrated with efforts of the DOE and EPA.
