For the c-axis conductivity, {sigma}{sub c}, of the colossal-magnetoresistive layered manganite La{sub 1.4}Sr{sub 1.6}Mn{sub 2}O{sub 7} below T{sub c} experimental evidence supports the double-exchange (DE) selection rule, i.e., {sigma}{sub c}{approx}cos{sup 2}({eta}/2), where {eta} is the angle between Mn spins in neighboring bilayers. Below T{sub c}, the data also determine the interbilayer magnetic exchange constant, which is reasonable with respect to recent spin-wave data, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. For c-axis fields, a mixed AF and spin-flop state (similar to the intermediate state of type-I superconductors) is a rigorous prediction of the data and modeling.
