Surface relief effect and atomic site correspondence in the grain boundary {alpha} precipitation in a {beta} Ti-Cr alloy
- Kyoto Univ. (Japan). Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering
A grain boundary precipitate holds a specific orientation relationship with respect to one of the adjacent matrix grain but exhibits an irrational orientation relationship with respect to the opposite grain. It has been considered that the specifically related precipitate/matrix interface is partially coherent although the irrationally related interface is incoherent and such a precipitate grows by the atomic attachment at the incoherent portion of growing interfaces on both sides of grain boundary. However, it was found that grain boundary precipitates tend to maintain good coherency with respect to both of the adjacent matrix grains. The present study aims to examine the surface relief associated with grain boundary precipitates and to clarify if atomic site correspondences are maintained in the grain boundary precipitation of {alpha}(hcp)phase from {beta}(bcc) matrix in a Ti-Cr alloy.
