Title: Simultaneous hydrodenitrogenation and hydrodesulfurization of distillate fuels related to coal/petroleum coprocessing

Conference ·
OSTI ID:20082388

Hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation have been studied widely but separately, each with a representative model compound. However, it has become an important subject to examine the effect of nitrogen on sulfur removal and the influence of sulfur on nitrogen conversion, since liquids from coprocessing of coal and petroleum contain both nitrogen and sulfur compounds and some crude oils have high content of nitrogen in addition to sulfur. The authors have examined simultaneous HDN and HDS of mixtures of quinoline (Q) and dibenzothiophene (DBT) in n-tridecane, as model liquids derived from coal and petroleum. Q and DBT are representative nitrogen and S compounds contained in Middle Distillates. The catalysts examined were two commercial catalysts (Co-Mo-P/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}, Ni-Mo-P/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}) that were sulfided before use in batch tests at 375 C. The authors observed some synergistic effects between DBT and Q; at some concentration DBT can help to denitrogenate the Q, and also a similar effect of Q that helps to desulfurize DBT. Results will be presented on the conversions and selectivities as well as the reaction paths of combined HDS+HDN in a reaction system under high pressure.
