The float fraction of a bituminous coal, with a size faction of 63--90 mm, was combusted under oxidizing conditions (air) in drop tube furnaces (DTFs) under various conditions to investigate the ash formation mechanisms. The data indicated that the char structure has an important influence on the particle size distribution of the formed ash. Char samples generated at high pressure have more particles of a higher internal porosity (the group 1 type particle) compared to those at atmospheric pressure, resulting in the formation of much finer ash particles. Data for ash liberation during the combustion shows that char fragmentation determines the fine ash formation for the early and middle combustion stages while the coalescence of the included mineral matter dominates the ash formation for the late combustion stage.
