Opportunity fuels at NIPSCO's Bailly generating station (or ``Can one project really meet the needs of fuels, electric production and environmental affairs?'')

The term ``opportunity fuels'' was a new expression for NIPSCO's Bailly Generating Station in 1998. As NIPSCO approaches the new millennium, Bailly has gained new experience on co-firing two such opportunity fuels with coal. The opportunity fuels are biomass, in the form of waste wood, and petroleum coke. The synergies of the two have produced some impressive results. The fuels department has taken a new interest in what may be an opportunity to reduce NOx, manage fuel cost, improve boiler efficiency and add a renewable fuel to NIPSCO's coal-only fuel portfolio. The results of NIPSCO coal, biomass and petroleum coke test program will be discussed along with lessons learned.
