The ``Real World'' of gasification: Database of worldwide facilities and market drivers

Conference ·
OSTI ID:20082205
Few coal experts fully appreciate the extensive ``real world'' commercial experience and success of gasification. Many only associate gasification with coal-based integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) for electric power generation. Many view IGCC as an advanced technology that is not commercial and not competitive with traditional coal-fired central power plants. However, gasification is commercially used without subsidies for manufacture of syngas (H{sub 2} and CO) for chemicals and fuels. Furthermore, the new growth area for gasification is industrial polygeneration (syngas + cogen steam and power) with ``opportunity fuels'' such as residual oil and petroleum coke. The objectives of this project were to collect, organize and maintain facility-specific information necessary to illustrate, characterize and enumerate the worldwide gasification industry; and to conduct an analysis of the public policy, market, and technical drivers and trends that will affect the degree and pace of increasing use of gasification technologies on a worldwide basis. The paper presents some of the data and the results of the analysis.
