Steam turbine integration options when repowering AES Greenidge with APFBC

An advanced circulating pressurized fluidized-bed combustion combined cycle (APFBC) is a new kind of coal-fired technology suited for repowering existing coal-fired steam plants. APFBC is now under test in large-scale demonstrations and should be ready for commercial repowering installations around year 2005. With this development schedule, it is prudent to begin evaluating APFBC configurations for APFBC repowering applications. This paper describes a conceptual design effort that analytically evaluates the merits of APFBC repowering. AES Greenidge is a power plant located near Dresden, New York, and sits on Seneca Lake, one of New York's Finger Lakes. The paper focuses on repowering the larger of the two steam electric generating units at AES Greenidge. This is Unit 4, a coal-fired 108,000 kWe reheat unit. The other unit at the site, Unit 3, is a non-reheat 55,000 kWe unit. In one of the cases, the Case 2 configuration, both Unit 3 and Unit 4 are repowered.
