Title: New developments in Kraemer drives with step-up chopper in the recovery circuit for large pumps and fans in power stations

Conference ·
OSTI ID:20018889

In old Power Stations most of pumps and fans are still operated with a conventional motor at constant speed, adjusting flow and pressure of the circuit by means of a damper, control valve, etc. thus throttling the normal circulation of the fluid and producing power losses. Changing operating conditions and oversizing of the drives in order to meet the requirements of the system in extreme situations are the most common reasons for these losses. Pontes Power Station is owned by Endesa, S.A. and it consists of four units of 350Mw each, i.e. 1,400Mw in total. It is located in the northwest of Spain and it was built along the years 1976--1979 and designed to burn the low heat value lignite coming from the open-cast mine located in the same area. To evacuate gases coming from the boilers, every unit has two induced draft fans with fixed pitch adjusting the furnace pressure to a constant value in the different operating conditions by means of a circular damper with turning blades integrated in the suction of the fan. Basic parameters of the original drive are: Fan impeller (3,7m. diameter), test block with g = 8722 N.m/Kg and Q = 600m 3/seg.; motor 745 rpm, squirrel cage. With the aim to reduce the emissions of atmospheric pollutants and extend the life of the mine a new project was developed in order to burn imported coal mixed with the local lignite, in a 50/50 proportion. A very large and important refurbishment of the combustion equipment in the boiler circuit was made and, as a result of the new situation, the capacity requirements in the air-gas circuit has been largely reduced, thus decreasing dramatically the efficiency of the fan. The study of the previous and new conditions done in order to find a solution to shut the waste of energy is explained in the following paragraphs.
