This article describes a project in the southern African country of Botswana where sustainable development principles were used to collect information on the generation of industrial wastes. Rather than relying on computer models or expert opinions, a physical survey was performed at a representative sampling of companies in the industrial sector to quantify and characterize the waste streams. An important aspect of the project was the use of students from the University of Botswana who were trained to perform the surveys throughout the country. By obtaining the needed information about the waste streams from direct observation and interviews, accurate and appropriate data could be used to make decisions about future waste management facilities needed in country. Also, using the team of students as researchers allowed a transference of knowledge to occur about the role of industrial wastes in the environmental picture of Botswana.
