Conference ·
OSTI ID:20014790
This paper presents an overview of the new ASCE Technical Guidance Document entitled ``Management of Leachate from Sanitary Landfills.'' The test, prepared by a team of solid waste professionals representing academia, industry and private practice, provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of the management of leachate from a modern lined Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfill. The peer-reviewed Technical guidance Document includes sections on: Characterization of MSW Leachate, Generation, Pumping, Storage, Management Options, and Emerging and Innovative Treatment. The potential audience for this document induces practicing professionals, educators, students and the regulatory community. The document, by design, has a practical, rather than an academic emphasis. Leachate management is an important issue for owner/operators as it represents a significant cost of operation, both active and post-closure. It is also an important issue from an environmental standpoint, since leachate is one of the primary routes of off-site migration and contaminant transport from a landfill if not properly managed.
