GPU Genco, along with the Energy and Environmental Research Corporation (EER), Washington Energy Processing (WEP) and Penn State University, have conducted a series of combustion tests using coal waste fines as a low solids coal water slurry co-firing fuel. The fine coal was recovered from a coal fines impoundment, cleaned, thickened and then co-fired with pulverized coal in a 147 MWe tangentially-fired pulverized coal boiler. The project team completed the system design, installed the equipment and conducted the tests in June 1997. The objective of the testing was to confirm the capability of low solids coal water slurry co-firing as a means of trimming the NOx production of the boiler. This paper presents the results of that combustion testing. In addition, the paper will outline GPU Genco's current development status for the low solids coal water slurry co-firing technology. The company's future plans for the technology will also be discussed.
