On-line monitoring of mercury concentrations in flue gases

Conference ·
OSTI ID:20006898
Gas phase mercury concentrations in flue gases from a variety of combustion sources including waste and sewage sludge incineration were measured by means of on-line monitors. As the monitor itself is solely sensitive to elemental mercury, the operation modes with/without a reduction unit in place upstream of the monitor have shown promise in distinguishing between oxidized mercury (Hg(ox.)) and elemental mercury (Hg(0)) concentrations. The monitors were used to investigate mercury removal over wet and dry air pollution control systems; in addition to that, emphases was placed on mercury speciation measurements at the inlet of air pollution control trains (APC) to reveal which mercury compound needs to be removed, and on mercury speciation upstream and downstream of wet scrubbers to better understand the effect of wet scrubbers on the Hg(0)/Hg(ox.) ratio.
