Calcium sulfide is a main product from coal gasification process where limestone or dolomite is used as a desulfurizing agent. Complete conversion of CaS to CaSO{sub 4} and CaO via the gas-solid reactions: CaS + 2O{sub 2} {yields} CaSO{sub 4} and CaS + 3/2O{sub 2} (yields) CaO + SO{sub 2} is desirable to allow safe disposal of bed ash material. The two reactions have been investigated at temperatures from 650 to 980 C with 1--21% O{sub 2} in N{sub 2} using a thermobalance. The effects of particle size, oxygen concentration and temperature on oxidation reaction were discussed, and the reaction model was also deduced.
