Operating results and the test plan for ash circulation system of 71 MWe PFBC demonstration plant in Wakamatsu

71MWe PFBC demonstration plant consisting of 56.2 MWe steam turbine and 14.8 MWe gas turbine had been calculated from Sep. 1994 to Dec. 1997 at Wakamatsu Coal Utilization Research Center, Electric Power Development Company, EPDC. The PFBC at Wakamatsu is the world-wide first plant that adopted hot gas filters (Ceramic Tube Filters: CTF) of 100% capacity. The PFBC plant was operated for 10,981 hours within the evaluation period, and achieved 785 hours continuous operation with CTF. The authors have also solved many problems by reviewing operational methods and modifying the design of facilities. Six kinds of coal with variety of characteristic, high sulfur contents, high ash contents, low volatile, etc. have been combusted, and two types of limestone have been tried as SO{sub 2} sorbent. This evaluation explained the high performance of efficiency, environment and operation, and proved advantage of the PFBC system clearly. And the various chemical reactions to gas and solid phase in the PFBC system have been cleared by investigating the data acquired from the demonstration test. As the next step of PFBC, ash circulation system on the Wakamatsu PFBC plant is planned to improve environmental performance and evaluate further reliability of boiler, gas turbine and CTF. This demonstration test will begin in Oct. 1998, and the new system will have been evaluated till the end of 1999. The authors report the performance and the characteristics of the Wakamatsu PFBC plant as evaluated results of past three-years demonstration test (Phase-1), and show the test plan (Phase-2) and outline of the modification for ash circulation system.
