Industrial pollution prevention partnership model for small and medium sized enterprises

Conference ·
OSTI ID:20006539
Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and less active industry trade associations need to forge partnerships in order to initiate, implement, and continuously improve their environmental management systemization. Pollution prevention (P2) is a new way of doing business amongst today's SMEs; it then follows that many trade associations are also in need to learn of P2, since these businesses are their members. P2 concepts can be communicated, on-site technical assistance provided, and training seminars conducted, if there is a coordinated effort among the interested environmental stakeholders. Stakeholders may include: (1) local, regional, and national government agencies: (2) local, national, and international industry associations; (3) local, national, and international professional associations (engineers, lawyers, bankers, and insurers). In order to capture the large segment of SMEs in North America, business leaders need to communicate the importance of environmental management systems--no matter how simple or complex to other businesses. Industry/government partnerships may be one way to help create the mechanism for environmental mentoring. A model, based on the printing and graphics industry in Canada, will show the inter-relationship of business, government, and service providers. This model, a process flow diagram, will point out the communication, assistance, and training opportunities that exist in any industrial sector dominated by SMEs.
