This study investigated the temporal and spatial distribution of PM{sub 2.5} and PM{sub 10} in southern Taiwan. A suspended particle sampling network including five sampling sites was established for this particular study. The sampling network covered Kaohsiung City, Kaohsiung County, and Pindong County where it is considered to be the worst air quality zone on the island of Taiwan. Regular sampling was conducted to collect particulate matter including TSP, PM{sub 10}, and PM{sub 2.5} simultaneously at four sampling sites (Luchu, Sanmin, Pindong, and Linyuan) from January to December, 1998. PM{sub 2.5} and PM{sub 10} were sampled by two dichotomous samplers, while TSP was sampled by a high-volume sampler at each sampling site. Suspended particles were regularly sampled for both daytime (from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm) and nighttime (from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am) in order to investigate the diurnal variation of PM{sub 2.5} and PM{sub 10}. In addition to regular sampling, a five-day intensive sampling was conducted at Chaocho. The size distribution and chemical composition of suspended particles were then further analyzed.
