The Office of Science and Technology in the US Department of Energy (DOE) are using the concept of Large-Scale Technology Demonstrations for the deactivation and decommissioning (D and D) of various types of nuclear facilities. Many improved and innovative technologies have been demonstrated during the past three years during actual facility decommissioning and deactivation projects. Actual cost and performance data for these technologies have been collected and compared to commercially available baseline technologies. Many of these demonstrated technologies have also been further deployed at other DOE sites for additional cleanup.
