The advancement of CO screening models

Evaluations of intersections for their impacts on surrounding air quality (specifically, their contributions to carbon monoxide concentrations) is required for many projects. A detailed analysis using the most accepted models of MOBILE5a (for emission factors) and CAL3QHC (for dispersion modeling) is time-consuming and overkill for most intersections. A screening process quickly eliminates all but the most likely violators. In the past, the screening process often involved simple charts or tables. These charts and tables were over-simplified and did not account for regional differences. With the advent of graphical user interfaces and high-speed computers, screening models can use MOBILE5a and CAL3QHC but still provide quick and easy user input while also incorporating more options. This increases the accuracy and consistency of results by analysts and reviewers throughout the state. Two examples of updated screening models are presented.
