The significance of averaging period on the effectiveness of NO{sub x} control strategies for ground-level ozone in central Texas

Conference ·
OSTI ID:20002093

The Urban Airshed Model was used to examine the sensitivity of 1-hour and 8-hour average ozone concentrations in Central Texas to reductions in the emissions of NO{sub x} and VOCs. The simulations resulted in two major findings. First, NO{sub x} emission reductions that are effective at reducing peak 1-hour average ozone concentrations can increase peak 8-hour average ozone concentrations. Second, NO{sub x} emission reductions that reduce the area in the domain that exceeds the 8-hour ozone standard can increase the peak 8-hour average concentration. These modeling results were obtained for the Austin area, however they may have relevance to other metropolitan areas of similar size
