In May 1996, the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) Twentynine Palms, California, initiated a PM{sub 10} monitoring program for the measurement of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10 microns (PM{sub 10}). MCAGCC established four PM{sub 10} monitoring sites on the perimeter of the 932 square mile military base. To date, site average PM{sub 10} levels have been well below the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS). A few high PM{sub 10} levels occurred on windy days when gusts exceeded 40 miles per hour. High winds amplify small disturbances to the dry terrain.
