Photophysical features of the M{sub 2}(CO){sub 10} M = Mn and Re, solution photochemistry
Characteristic absorption bands of the nonacarbonyl, Re{sub 2}(CO){sub 9} with {lambda}{sub max} < 360 nm, and pentacarbonyl, Re(CO){sub 5} with {lambda}{sub (max)}= 550 nm, complexes were observed after laser flash irradiations of deaerated Re{sub 2}(CO){sub 10} in cyclohexane. Scavenging of the nonacarbonyl by acetonitrile in deaerated solutions produced Re{sub 2}(CO){sub 9}CH{sub 3}CN, a stable product whose absorption spectrum shows a maximum at 320 nm. The previously investigated reaction of the pentacarbonyl with Cu(Me{sub 4}-[14] 1,3,8,10-tetraeneN{sub 4})Cl{sup +}, eq 5, was used for the determination of the pentacarbonyl quantum yield.
