Title: Design and fabrication of one piece in-situ ribbed cell walls for application in an advanced AMTEC cell

Alkali Metal Thermal to Electrical Conversion (AMTEC) technology has been identified as a promising advanced space power technology with a predicted thermal to electrical conversion efficiency of {approximately}20%. The AMTEC technology has been the focus of several research endeavors in recent years and in essence it utilizes sodium and beta-alumina solid electrolyte tubes placed within a metal housing (cell wall) forming an AMTEC cell. The future application of the AMTEC technology, as the basis of an advanced power system for future deep space missions, is dependent on the development of AMTEC cells which will have the appropriate long term physical and mechanical properties to ensure the successful completion of the mission. The emphasis of this paper is on the design and fabrication of one piece in-situ ribbed cell walls for application in AMTEC cells. Novel machining and laser welding processes were employed which allowed the successful fabrication of the one piece thin walled 0.10mm--0.25mm (0.004--0.010in) cells. In-situ ribbed cell walls have the advantage over other cell wall designs in that the number of piece parts and the total weld area is reduced greatly simplifying fabrication. Test results show that the fabricated one piece cell walls were hermetic (helium leak rates of less than 1 {times} 10{sup {minus}8} cm{sup 3}/s) and had sufficient compression strength to meet mission requirements.
