Numerical studies on improvement of disk MHD generator performance

Conference ·
OSTI ID:20000320
Numerical calculations were carried out on MHD flows in a disk MHD generator considering the nonequilibrium ionization process in the nozzle region. The objectives of the present study are to develop a numerical simulator with high accuracy for the disk MHD generator using cesium seeded argon as working fluid, to find the optimum operating condition and to improve the performance of the generator. A quasi-one dimensional (Q1D) simulation code which explained well the recent experimental results was used in the present study. First, the effect of added positive swirl inside the nozzle on the performance was examined. Next, the effects of applied magnetic flux density strength and distribution on the performance were examined. It was confirmed from the results that the performance was improved with the added swirl and the optimized magnetic flux density distribution.
