Recent developments in production of high-brilliance x-ray beams and in data-processing using high-speed computers now make it possible to envisage a high speed system for computed microtomography. A conceptual design for a real-time computed microtomography (RTCMT) apparatus based on use of x-ray beams from an undulator source at the Argonne Advanced Photon Source (APS) will be presented. The aim is to produce a system which can be used to acquire and display volumetric tomographic data with 256{sup 3} voxels at a rate of 10-15 Hz. The components of the system include the APS undulator x-ray source, a high-speed charge-coupled device (CCD) x-ray detector, and high-speed parallel computers for image reconstruction and data visualization. Prospects for the realization of the RTCMT apparatus and its possible use in experiments will be discussed.
