A pulsed neutron generator using a solenoidal and monocusp ion source
- Sandia National Lab., Albuquerque, NM (United States)
The authors are developing a new High Output Zetatron for neutron activation analysis. The electric fields have been reduced on the inside of the tube by putting a guard ring on the outside of the tube encased in ceramic. A screen now separates the plasma region from the high field region. The screen coupled with planar fields between the screen and the high voltage accelerator eliminates overfocussing on the target. The diameter of the beam is now 1.0 cm vs. 0.2 cm at 120 kV accelerating potential and 100 mA tube current. The authors have also developed the SAMIS source as a drop-in replacement for the Penning source used in the present zetatron. Coupling a solenoidal magnetic field with a cusp magnetic field has allowed them to reduce the diameter of a previous magnetic cusp sources from 15 cm to 2.5 cm.. Using deuterium gas, the authors have measured over 450 mA of saturated ion current through a 0.6 cm diameter hole. The SAMIS source has been operated at pulse widths as short as 10 microseconds and at pulse repetition rates greater than 30 Hz. With a 15 cm long source, the SAMIS source generates over 80% atomic deuterium ions at pressures as low as .5 Torr. The authors are looking at ways of changing the cathode geometry to minimize ion sputtering. The three goals for a new cathode geometry are: (1) long life; (2) good electrical efficiency; and (3) minimal ion contamination.
