High resolution photodetachment spectroscopy
- Univ. of Goeteborg (Sweden)
A collinear laser-ion beam apparatus has been used to determine the energy dependence of the photodetachment cross section for Li{sup {minus}} for photon energies between 4.2 eV and 4.5 eV. These photon energies are sufficient in order to detach one electron and to excite the remaining neutral atom to the 3s or 3p states. The energy dependence of the cross section shows a broad structure caused by a strongly mixed doubly excited state in Li{sup {minus}}, mainly composed by 3p4s and 3pnd, situated 0.13 eV below the 3p threshold. Further, a sharp peak in the cross section appears just below the 3p threshold caused by a series of Rydberg states. The experimental cross sections agree very well with theoretical calculations using the complex rotation method.
