The Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will begin the production of accelerated radioactive ion beams (RIBs) for nuclear physics experiments during the Fall of 1995. For the experimental nuclear structure research program at HRIBF, activity will center around use of the Recoil Mass Spectrometer (RMS). This state-of-the-art separator will prove essential in extracting structure information from the low cross section reaction channels expected in the production of nuclei at and near the proton drip line using RIBs. Progress will be reported on the installation, testing and commissioning of this device, along with the status of the development of ancillary detection equipment to be used with the RMS, including the Parallel Plate Avalache Counter, ionization chamber, double-sided silicon strip detector and Ge array upgrade.
