State of atoms and interatomic interactions in complex perovskite-like oxides: I. State of manganese atoms in LaSrMn{sub x}Al{sub 1}-{sub x}O{sub 4} solid solutions
- St. Petersburg State Univ. (Russian Federation)
Study of the temperature and concentration dependences of the magnetic properties of solid solutions of layered oxides containing manganese and aluminum atoms in similar crystallographic positions revealed a change in the ground state of part of the manganese atoms. Such an effect was previously observed for iron, cobalt, and nickel atoms in similar solid solutions. In the case of manganese, however, components of the crystal lattice (lanthanum and strontium atoms, which determine the size and distortion for the sites of the transition metal) induce conversion of part of the manganese atoms into a higher oxidation state, attaining a size favorable for formation of an equilibrium solid solution. 12 refs., 3 figs.
