Plasma sprayed coatings are an attractive option for the application as a plasma facing material in future fusion devices, especially in view of in-situ repair of damaged or eroded surfaces. Typically coating thicknesses are expected to be in the millimeter range. In areas with relatively low heat fluxes like the first wall, coating requirements may allow for a lower thermal conductivity as compared to the coating of divertor and/or limiter parts. A clear problem area for plasma sprayed coatings is the relative low value of thermal conductivity in the as-sprayed condition as compared to fully dense material and even as compared to material with a similar amount of porosity. Typically the room temperature conductivity is as low as 10-30% of the value for dense material. Effects of post treatment of as-deposited coatings should therefore be considered.
