The PETRA facility for the investigation of the long-term performance of a palladium/silver permeator under a tritium atmosphere

Palladium/silver permeators are potentially crucial components in plasma exhaust clean-up facilities and in installations for the recovery of tritium from a ceramic blanket. To evaluate the long-term mechanical integrity of a commercial palladium/silver permeator under a tritium atmosphere and to investigate possible segregation phenomena caused by reactive impurities typical to the fusion fuel cycle a technical experiment (PETRA facility) has been installed in the tritium Laboratory Karlsruhe (TLK). The experiment is considered complementary to the catalytic purification experiment CAPRICE, also in operation at the TLK. The PETRA experiment is a closed loop designed for the continuous long-term uninterrupted operation with up to 2 g of tritium. The pressure in the loop is kept below that of the glove box. All heated components have been enclosed by an evacuated containment. Critical components are surveilled and controlled by at least two temperature sensors and a virtual value obtained from a comparison between them. Pressure sensors are used to stop the experiment in case of a pressure excursion or an air inleak into the primary system. Special precautions are to guarantee the safe operation of the pump combination used to evacuate the secondary down stream side of the permeator and the protective volume of spectroscopic gas cells.
