A new conceptual nuclear energy system with the least inventory of long-lived-radioactive-actinide-waste (LLRAW)
- Institute of Plasma Physics, Hefei Anhui (China)
A new conceptual nuclear energy system is proposed in this paper, with the least inventory as well as LLRAW, including Nuclear Fuel Breeding (NFB), Nuclear Energy Generation (NEG) as well as LLRAW transmutation. The subsystem of NFB consists of {sup 232}Th-{sup 233}U and {sup 238}U-{sup 239}Pu fuel cycle in Fusion-Fission-Hybrid-Reactors (FFHR). The {sup 233}U is supplied for HTGR and {sup 239}Pu for PWR (Pu) or LMFBR to generate electric energy. The subsystem of LLRAW transmutation includes Minor Actinide-Radioactive-Waste (Np, Am, Cm) - Fusion-Fission-Hybrid-Transmuter using {sup 239}Pu as neutron multiplier in the blanket and Pu-Isotopes ({sup 238}Pu, {sup 240}Pu, {sup 242}Pu) - Fission-Fusion-Hybrid-Transmuter using {sup 233}U as neutron multiplier in the blanket. Detailed calculations have been done for the above two types of transmuter. The results showed that the Fusion-Fission-Hybrid-Transmuter is feasible with reliable safety and high efficiency. For the two types of transmuter, the fusion power in the core is about 170 MW. The fusion neutron load on the first wall is 1.0 MW/m{sup 2}.
