Title: Development of insulating coatings for liquid metal blankets

One of the crucial issues of liquid metal cooled blankets is the feasibility of electrical insulating coatings on the inner surface of liquid metal ducts. Such coatings have to provide a sufficiently high electrical resistance between the flowing liquid metal and the duct walls in order to keep the magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) pressure drop in a tolerable region. The requirements on this resistance are described for conditions typical for self-cooled blankets. An important issue is the influence of imperfections in the insulating layer on the MHD pressure drop. Such imperfections have to be anticipated since cracking and flaking of the layer cannot be excluded. Estimates indicate that liquid metal cooling is feasible only if there is a mechanism for self-healing, leading to the growth of a new insulating layer if the liquid metal comes into contact with the layer beneath the cracked insulator.
