Real-time networks: A peek at tomorrow`s transmission market
Back in March, when the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued its {open_quotes}Mega{close_quotes} proposal for electric utility restructuring (some say {open_quotes}Giga{close_quotes}), we overlooked something that others probably did, too. At Public Utilities Fornightly, we assumed that the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking was only about regulatory policy. But there was more. With FERC`s blessing, the North American Electric Reliability Council began to conduct a series of workshops to determine what information tools would be needed by generators and traders of bulk power in order to gain meaningful access to electric transmission lines. This article is a brief summary of several information systems/networks that have arisen in this area of the electric utility industry.
