Drilling fluid plays a key role in the installation of a pipeline by horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and accounts for the majority of the associated environmental impact. An improper drilling fluid program can result in stuck pipe. Uncontrolled discharge of drilling fluid downhole can damage or undermine adjacent structures. The cost of drilling fluid involved with pipeline installation, particularly when disposal costs are considered, can be substantial. It is the objective of this manual to increase the level of sophistication involved with drilling fluids in pipeline installation and to present practical criteria to govern the use of drilling fluids in the HDD process. This will benefit drilling contractors and pipeline owners by reducing costs. Standardization of environmentally acceptable drilling fluid practices will also reduce permitting problems. This manual is meant for use by design engineers and drilling rig operators in designing, permitting, and installing drilled pipeline segments. It is not intended to be a detailed theoretical treatment of the subject of drilling fluids. Individuals interested in this are directed to the referenced texts and papers which support the manual.
