Reliability-based safety factors for flexible risers

The present paper summarizes findings from reliability analyses of four different flexible riser configurations. The analysis framework and statistical description of the input parameters are essentially the same for all the configurations. For the Ultimate Limit State, combined load effects at the upper end of the risers are considered. For two of the configurations, the Fatigue Limit State is also analyzed for the same cross-sections. Failure probabilities are reported as well as statistical properties of load effects, capacities and fatigue lifetimes. Relations between safety factors and failure probabilities are investigated. Calibration of safety factors is discussed, and relevant values based on the four case studies are established.
