Practical issues in AM/FM - Scada integration

Many utilities today in their attempts to increase productivity are making, or at least planning to make, use of various computer-based tools such as Automated Mapping/Facilities Management (AM/FM), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Management Information (MIS) systems. With modem technical concepts such as Open Systems, Local Area Networks and Enterprise Wide Computing there is a further interest in having these systems interact with each other to share information and data. Traditionally operations staff responsible for the realtime operation of the electric power system need to manually search through piles of paper maps of their systems to plan switching operations or to reason about possible location of faults. This can be a very slow and inefficient process. Furthermore, keeping these paper maps and records accurate and up-to-date is difficult and expensive. Thus, allowing operations personnel to have online access to geographic maps and drawings of the power system during planning of maintenance operations or when trying to determine strategies for restoring power to their customers following an unplanned outage, is particularly interesting and attractive. This paper describes some of the practical issues that CAE Electronics Ltd has found must be considered when attempting to integrate AM/FM and SCADA systems. Some examples are given from our experience in this area.
