Principles of activation of nickel hydroxide electrodes (NHE) for alkaline batteries have been considered. These principles are based on using {gamma}-NiOOH as a component of the active material. This results in increasing the nickel oxidation degree in a charged state and in increasing the interval of its changes during discharging in a wide range of current densities. It has been established that the stable activation effects that determine the increasing coulombic efficiency of nickel are connected with the occurrence and retention of the characteristic defects in the hydroxide lattice and are reached by purposeful modification of the electrode structure. It seems worthy to use the results obtained to improve the specific parameters of the cycled alkaline batteries in which the NHEs in the charged state are usually {Beta}-NiOOH with addition of amorphous (according to X-ray data) {gamma}-NiOOH phase.
