Three types of salt-bath treatments were applied to Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates and evaluated in terms of their effect on the lubrication performance of sputter-deposited MoS{sub 2} films. Lubrication performance was investigated by conducting pin/disk sliding tests in a vacuum (<10{sup -5}Pa). The test results indicated that the wear life of the MoS{sub 2} film was noticeably improved by applying a cyanate-bath treatment to the Ti-alloy substrate. The MoS{sub 2} film on the cyanate bath-treated Ti-alloy substrate showed a 300-fold improvement in wear life compared with the film on an untreated substrate. This improvement is presumably caused by the increased affinity between the MoS{sub 2} film and Ti{sub 2}O on the substrate. 18 refs., 9 figs., 4 tabs.
