Automated soxhle exraction and concentration of analytes in soil and sludge
- ABC Instruments, Columbia, MO (United States)
Soxhlet extraction has long been a method of choice for extraction of semivolatile analytes from solid matrices. It is a semi-automatic process but still requires considerable operator time for set-up, glassware cleaning, etc. and the extracts must subsequently be concentrated. A truly automatic Soxhlet type extractor (Soxtherm) offers unattended two-stage extraction followed by solvent reduction, ending with the extract in a small volume ready for recovery. EPA SW-846 Method No. 3541 has been applied to use with this extractor with good results. A variety of compounds of environmental interest, chlorinated pesticides and other semivolatile analytes, are shown to be efficiently extracted from different types of soil and sludge. Principles of operation of the instrument are discussed and recovery and precision data are presented.
