This report describes work with plasma torches at Retech since 1970. The first application was to remelting of iron and nickel-base alloys. Since then, applications in rotating grade aircraft parts, production of special metal powders, treatment of hazardous wastes and processing of metallurgical wastes have been demonstrated. The type of plasma torch used in Retech`s equipment is the swirl flow, hollow electrode type patented by Linde Division of Union Carbide in the 1960s (Eschenbach 1966, Baird 1967). Schlienger Engineering, the predecessor company to Retech, licensed the technology from Union Carbide.
